July Meeting: Astronomy Simulation Software

July 29, 2021 @ 7:30 pm9:00 pm EDT

ASG Vice President Anwar Al-Mallah will present the latest updates to the astronomy simulation software he has previously shown to the club. These programs will include Universe Sandbox, Space Engine, Stellarium, and Microsoft Flight Simulator.

New features in Universe Sandbox include the ability to model climate and cloud cover more accurately. The graphics quality in Space Engine will show improvement since the last presentation, now being rendered on the latest RTX 30 series GPU. Galaxy collision simulations have also been improved in Universe Sandbox, and new historical simulations have been added.

Flybys of new astronomical sites on Earth will be shown in Flight Simulator, and a demonstration of Stellarium will be given. If time allows, we will take a quick tour of the Google Sky client and the World Wide Telescope website.

The Zoom session will open at 7:00 pm for an informal chat. The presentation will start at 7:30 pm.
