SUMMARY:Star Party
DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, we will hold a star party at the Greenbelt Observatory. The observatory will be open to visitors to view the wonders of the heavens. People are also welcome to bring their own telescopes to set up for observation. \nThe event is open to members and non-members of all ages at no cost. We provide a fun\, family-friendly environment for learning about the universe. This is a great way to meet other astronomers in the community. And\, if you are new to the hobby\, members are always willing to help you learn how to use your telescope. \nOur star parties generally begin about an hour after sunset and run for two hours. \nPlease note that star parties may be canceled without prior notice in the event of overcast skies or extremely inclement weather conditions. In addition\, the observatory is made of metal and has no heating or cooling system. Please be aware that the temperature inside will be roughly the same inside as it is outside\, although in summer it is sometimes hotter inside. Please dress accordingly. \nIn accordance with Prince George’s County guidelines\, masks are voluntary.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: "The Dish" Showing
DESCRIPTION:July 20 is the anniversary of when humans first set foot on the moon in 1969. In keeping with our “Summer Film Festival” tradition\, the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt will present a free showing of “The Dish”. This popular Australian film\, starring the recently deceased Sam Neill\, tells the story of the Parkes Radio Telescope’s role in the Apollo project. \nYou can view the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dyGpXcQl-g \nThe presentation will begin at 7:00 PM\, 30 minutes earlier than our standard start time.\nDue to licensing restrictions\, this will be an in-person only event.\nOur monthly meetings are usually held on the last Thursday of each month. Our speakers are drawn from all around the country\, including experts from NASA\, the Smithsonian\, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory\, and other scientific institutions. Our members also give presentations about subjects of interest to amateur astronomers. \nThe events are held in room 114 at the Greenbelt Community Center. There will be no virtual meeting today. This presentation will begin at 7:00 PM\, 30 minutes earlier than our standard start time. \nThe presentations are free and open to the public. \nPer our insurance requirements\, anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n
