DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt will host a star party at the City of Greenbelt Observatory on Saturday evening\, September 3\, starting at 8:30 pm. We’ll be using the observatory’s 14-inch telescope to view some of the many objects currently high in the sky\, including the moon\, which will be at first quarter. \nAll are welcome\, whether Astronomical Society of Greenbelt members or not. Visitors are encouraged to set up their own telescopes on the hilltop in front of the observatory. In accordance with Prince George County guidelines\, masks are not required.

SUMMARY:Blackwater Falls Astronomy Weekend
DESCRIPTION:The Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society will hold its astronomy weekend in partnership with the WV Division of Natural Resources and Blackwater Falls State Park. This annual event takes place every fall in Davis\, WV\, under incredible dark skies that are an astronomer and astrophotographers dream come true. \nThis star party is not hosted by the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt. It is listed here as a courtesy to another club in the Mid-East Region of the Astronomical League. Please consult the event website for the most up-to-date information. \nSue Bassett and Kevin Wilson\, who are members of the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt\, will be giving presentations at the Blackwater Falls Astronomy Weekend. Sue will be speaking on “Fantastic Beasts and Why You Can’t Find Them\,” and Kevin will be giving a presentation on amateur radio astronomy.

SUMMARY:September Meeting: Getting Students Excited about Space
DESCRIPTION:Selene Willis will be giving a talk entitled “Getting Students Excited about Space.” Selene has been a formal science educator for 15 years in public and independent middle and high schools. She spent the last year as the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow at NASA\, focusing on equity\, inclusion\, and broadening participation of STEM education for Science Activation projects within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. She is currently the new deputy director at The Ingenuity Project in Baltimore\, MD. \nSelene holds a BS in biochemistry from Virginia Tech and a MEd from Pace University. Selene is in the final stages of her doctoral degree in science curriculum and instruction at the University of South Florida. Her research examines the use of justice-centered science pedagogy and curriculum development as a path to student critical consciousness. \nThis event is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Greenbelt Community Center and live streamed on Zoom. We will gather for informal chat at 7:00 pm.
