DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt will host a star party at the City of Greenbelt Observatory on Saturday evening\, August 6\, starting at 9:30 pm. We’ll be using the observatory’s 14-inch telescope to view some of the many objects currently high in the sky\, including the moon\, which will be waxing gibbous. \nAll are welcome\, whether Astronomical Society of Greenbelt members or not. Visitors are encouraged to set up their own telescopes on the hilltop in front of the observatory. In accordance with Prince George County guidelines\, masks are not required. \nWe encourage people to attend the star party in person\, but we will also be simulcasting images from the observatory telescope in real time via Zoom.

Attendees are asked to park in the ball field lot\, not up on the hill\, unless bringing a telescope. If you are arriving after dark\, please be aware that your car headlights can ruin the night vision of people already viewing. Please try to aim your headlights away from the hill or turn them off if possible. \nThe star party will be canceled without notice if it is hopelessly cloudy. \nThis event will be also be viewable on Zoom for those who might not be able to come in person.

DESCRIPTION:The Astronomical Society of Greenbelt welcomes all to hear Conrad Terrill\, chair of the ASG Observatory Committee\, speak on “Greenbelt’s Light Bucket: The ASG’s Telescope in the City of Greenbelt Observatory\,” on Thursday\, August 25\, at 7:30 pm. His talk will cover upgrades over the past few years plus a brief pictorial history of astronomy in Greenbelt and of the installation of the observatory. \nThe talk will take place in Room 114 of the Greenbelt Community Center and will also be broadcast live over Zoom.
