SUMMARY:July Meeting: Astronomy Simulation Software
DESCRIPTION:ASG Vice President Anwar Al-Mallah will present the latest updates to the astronomy simulation software he has previously shown to the club. These programs will include Universe Sandbox\, Space Engine\, Stellarium\, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. \nNew features in Universe Sandbox include the ability to model climate and cloud cover more accurately. The graphics quality in Space Engine will show improvement since the last presentation\, now being rendered on the latest RTX 30 series GPU. Galaxy collision simulations have also been improved in Universe Sandbox\, and new historical simulations have been added. \nFlybys of new astronomical sites on Earth will be shown in Flight Simulator\, and a demonstration of Stellarium will be given. If time allows\, we will take a quick tour of the Google Sky client and the World Wide Telescope website. \nThe Zoom session will open at 7:00 pm for an informal chat. The presentation will start at 7:30 pm. \nZoom Info\nJoin the Zoom Meeting. \n\nMeeting ID: 895 8057 7207\nPasscode: 748946\nDial by your location\n\n(301) 715-8592 US (Washington\, DC)\n(646) 558-8656 US (New York)\n(312) 626-6799 US (Chicago)\n(669) 900-9128 US (San Jose)\n(253) 215-8782 US (Tacoma)\n(346) 248-7799 US (Houston)\n\n\nFind your local number

SUMMARY:Alpha Capricornids
DESCRIPTION:The Alpha Capricornids are active from July 3–August 15 with a maximum centered on July 28. This shower is not very strong and rarely produces in excess of five shower members per hour. What is notable about this shower is the number of bright fireballs produced during its activity period. \nFor more information on meteor showers\, visit the American Meteor Society.

SUMMARY:June Meeting: Ancient Babylonian Astronomical Texts
DESCRIPTION:ASG member Kevin A. Wilson will present on ancient Babylonian astronomical texts. \nAstronomy began in ancient Mesopotamia\, and we have a rich record of star catalogues and planetary observations from Sumeria\, Babylon\, and Assyria. An overview of these texts will be provide\, followed by a more in-depth discussion of observations of Venus from the 17th century BCE. \nKevin A. Wilson earned his PhD in Northwest Semitic Philology and Old Testament/Hebrew Bible from The Johns Hopkins University. He also holds  Master of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology degrees from Yale Divinity School. He has taught at colleges and seminaries in Virginia\, Tennessee\, Iowa\, and Massachusetts\, and spent three years as a professor in Lithuania. He has worked on archaeological excavations in Israel\, Egypt\, and Jordan. \nThe Zoom session will open at 7:00 pm for an informal chat. The presentation will start at 7:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Lunar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:A total lunar eclipse will take place on the morning of May 26. Unfortunately\, the moon will set for viewers in the eastern US before totality is reached. The farther west people are in the US\, the more of the eclipse they will be able to see\, with viewers on the West Coast being able to see the entire eclipse. \nEclipse Timetable\nAll times are in Eastern Daylight Time. \n\nPartial umbral eclipse begins: 5:45 am\nTotal eclipse begins: 7:11 am\nTotal eclipse ends: 7:26 am\nPartial umbral eclipse ends: 8:52 am

SUMMARY:Astronomy Day
DESCRIPTION:Astronomy Day is a biannual event held in the United States and other countries. It is intended to promote interest in astronomy and interaction between the general public and various astronomy enthusiasts\, groups\, and professionals. The day is observed in the spring and the fall.  Astronomy Day in the spring always falls on a Saturday between mid-April and mid-May and is scheduled so as to occur at or close to the first quarter moon.  Astronomy Day in the fall is near the first-quarter moon between mid-September and mid-October. \nDue to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt will not be hosting any public events this spring.

SUMMARY:Eta Aquariids
DESCRIPTION:The Eta Aquariids are a strong shower when viewed from the southern hemisphere. From the equator northward\, they usually only produce medium rates of 10–30 per hour just before dawn. Although the shower is active April 19–May 28\, activity is best around the peak on May 4–5. \nFor more information on meteor showers\, visit the American Meteor Society.

SUMMARY:Virtual Star Party
DESCRIPTION:At this event\, we’ll be focusing mainly on Virgo Cluster galaxies\, as these are currently high in the sky. Chad Leader and Conrad Terrill will be doing the imaging from telescopes set up in their back yards. Conrad will be doing close-up imaging and Chad will handle wide-field views. All are welcome to join the Zoom session\, whether they are members of the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt or not.  The session will open around 8:45 PM EDT.  Chad and Conrad plan to be polar-aligned and ready to go around 9:00 PM EDT. \nZoom Information\nLink: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84031946452?pwd=c3graTdiTVU1OXllVjBrbVV5UlBWUT09\nMeeting ID: 840 3194 6452\nPasscode: 539915\nOne-tap mobile\n\n+13017158592\,\,84031946452#\,\,\,\,*539915# US (Washington DC)\n+13126266799\,\,84031946452#\,\,\,\,*539915# US (Chicago)\n\nDial by your location\n\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\nFind your local number

SUMMARY:Lyrids
DESCRIPTION:The Lyrids is a medium strength shower that usually produces good rates for three nights centered on the maximum. These meteors also usually lack persistent trains but can produce fireballs. They are best seen from the northern hemisphere where the radiant is high in the sky at dawn. Activity from this shower can be seen from the southern hemisphere\, but at a lower rate. \nThe Lyrids are active April 16–30\, 2021\, with their peak of activity coming on the night of April 21–22. \nFor more information on meteor showers\, visit the American Meteor Society.
