SUMMARY:September Meeting: Getting Students Excited about Space
DESCRIPTION:Selene Willis will be giving a talk entitled “Getting Students Excited about Space.” Selene has been a formal science educator for 15 years in public and independent middle and high schools. She spent the last year as the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow at NASA\, focusing on equity\, inclusion\, and broadening participation of STEM education for Science Activation projects within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. She is currently the new deputy director at The Ingenuity Project in Baltimore\, MD. \nSelene holds a BS in biochemistry from Virginia Tech and a MEd from Pace University. Selene is in the final stages of her doctoral degree in science curriculum and instruction at the University of South Florida. Her research examines the use of justice-centered science pedagogy and curriculum development as a path to student critical consciousness. \nThis event is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Greenbelt Community Center and live streamed on Zoom. We will gather for informal chat at 7:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:The ASG’s summer film festival returns with The Martian. This highly popular film stars Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars. Praised for its special effects and mostly accurate science\, this 2015 film is PG-13 and has an audience approval rating of 91% on the tomatometer (although potato meter would have been more appropriate here.) Running time is 141 minutes. Due to copyright restrictions\, this will be an in-person only meeting. \nThe film will be shown in Room 103 of the Greenbelt Community Center.

DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt will host a star party at the City of Greenbelt Observatory on Saturday evening\, May 28\, starting at 9:30 pm. We’ll be using the observatory’s 14-inch telescope to view some of the many galaxies currently high in the sky.  \nAll are welcome\, whether Astronomical Society of Greenbelt members or not. Visitors are encouraged to set up their own telescopes on the hilltop in front of the observatory.  In accordance with Prince George County guidelines\, masks are not required.

SUMMARY:April Meeting: Amateur Radio Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Kevin A. Wilson\, PhD\, will be presenting a talk on amateur radio astronomy and the DIY radio telescope he built to study the hydrogen emissions from the Milky Way. \nThis event is presented in hybrid format. We will be meeting in room 114 at the Greenbelt Community Center. For those who are unable to attend in person or would prefer to watch online\, we will be livestreaming the event on Zoom. \nKevin earned his PhD in Northwest Semitic Philology and Old Testament/Hebrew Bible from The Johns Hopkins University. He also holds  Master of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology degrees from Yale Divinity School. He has taught at colleges and seminaries in Virginia\, Tennessee\, Iowa\, and Massachusetts\, and spent three years as a professor in Lithuania. He has worked on archaeological excavations in Israel\, Egypt\, and Jordan. Kevin is the director of marketing for the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt. \nThe Zoom session will open at 7:00 pm for an informal chat.
