DESCRIPTION:At our monthly meeting on June 22 at 7:00 pm\, Dr. Kevin P. Hand will deliver a lecture entitled “Alien Oceans on Earth and Beyond.” Due to a conflict\, this meeting will be held a week earlier than our usual last-Thursday-of-the-month slot. This meeting will also be virtual only\, with no in-person meeting at the Greenbelt Community Center. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. The meeting will begin with casual conversation at 7:00 pm\, and the lecture will start at 7:30 pm. \nLecture Abstract\nWhere is the best place to find living life beyond Earth? It may be that the small\, ice-covered moons of Jupiter and Saturn harbor some of the most habitable real estate in our Solar System. Life loves liquid water and these moons have lots of it. \nThese alien oceans of the outer solar system have likely persisted for much of the history of the solar system and as a result they are highly compelling targets in our search for life beyond Earth. Dr. Hand will explain the science behind why we think we\nknow these oceans exist and what we know about the conditions on these worlds. He will focus on Jupiter’s moon Europa\, which is a top priority for future missions. He will also detail how the exploration of Earth’s ocean is helping to guide our understanding of the potential habitability of worlds like Europa. \nSpeaker Bio\nDr. Hand is a planetary scientist and astrobiologist at NASA’s JPL\, where he directs the Ocean Worlds Lab. His research focuses on the search for life in the solar system\, with an emphasis on Jupiter’s moon Europa. He is helping lead NASA’s Europa Lander mission concept\, and from 2011 to 2016 he served as the deputy chief scientist for Solar System Exploration at JPL. His fieldwork has taken him from the Artic to the Antarctica and to the depths of Earth’s ocean. We gather at 7:00 for informal discussion\, and the lecture begins at 7:30. \nThis month’s meeting with feature Dr. Louth “Lu” Chou\, will speak on “Searching for Life-as-We-Don’t-Know-It on Future Planetary Missions using Mass Spectrometry.” Her research area is agnostic biosignatures\, requiring life detection methods that identify unknowable\, unfamiliar features and chemistry that may represent processes of life as yet unrecognized.  She is also involved in instrument design for future planetary missions that may search for such life.\n \nDr. Chou\, an astrobiologist and organic chemist\, is currently a postdoctoral research associate at the Center for Space Science and Technology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County\, working on the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite onboard the Curiosity rover in the Planetary Environments Lab at Goddard Space Flight Center. SUMMARY:November Meeting: Cryovolcanism of Our Solar System
DESCRIPTION:Our November meeting will be held on Thursday\, November 17. Dr. Caitlin Ahrens will be presenting a talk entitled “Pop\, Fizz\, Bang: Cryovolcanism of Our Solar System.” This event is free and open to the public. We will gather at 7:00 pm for informal conversation\, and the lecture will begin at 7:30 pm. \nDr. Ahrens’s research involves remote sensing of icy surfaces and volatile interactions\, including permanently shadowed craters at the lunar poles and cryovolcanism (ice volcanos). Dr. Ahrens also works on several planetary geomorphology projects\, including lava flow morphology\, glaciers\, and caldera formation on Mars\, Ceres\, Titan\, and Pluto. She also has experience in radio astronomy\, seismology\, and high-altitude rocket payloads. \nDr. Ahrens received her BS in physics/astrophysics and geology from West Virginia University in 2015 and a PhD in space and planetary science at the University of Arkansas in 2020. Dr. Ahrens is currently a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow at the Goddard Space Flight Center and a member of the Diviner Science Team with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. SUMMARY:September Meeting: Getting Students Excited about Space
DESCRIPTION:Selene Willis will be giving a talk entitled “Getting Students Excited about Space.” Selene has been a formal science educator for 15 years in public and independent middle and high schools. She spent the last year as the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow at NASA\, focusing on equity\, inclusion\, and broadening participation of STEM education for Science Activation projects within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. She is currently the new deputy director at The Ingenuity Project in Baltimore\, MD. \nSelene holds a BS in biochemistry from Virginia Tech and a MEd from Pace University. Selene is in the final stages of her doctoral degree in science curriculum and instruction at the University of South Florida. Her research examines the use of justice-centered science pedagogy and curriculum development as a path to student critical consciousness. \nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The Astronomical Society of Greenbelt has been chosen as a community partner of NASA to celebrate the release of the first scientific images from the James Webb Space Telescope\, which were revealed on July 12. DESCRIPTION:The ASG’s summer film festival returns with The Martian. This highly popular film stars Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars. Praised for its special effects and mostly accurate science\, this 2015 film is PG-13 and has an audience approval rating of 91% on the tomatometer (although potato meter would have been more appropriate here.) Running time is 141 minutes. Due to copyright restrictions\, this will be an in-person only meeting. \nThe film will be shown in Room 103 of the Greenbelt Community Center.

He has taught at colleges and seminaries in Virginia\, Tennessee\, Iowa\, and Massachusetts\, and spent three years as a professor in Lithuania. He has worked on archaeological excavations in Israel\, Egypt\, and Jordan. SUMMARY:January Meeting: The Legacy of Arecibo's Planetary Radar System
DESCRIPTION:Alessondra Springmann is a planetary science PhD candidate at the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory\, studying meteorites\, comets\, and asteroids.  She will be discussing her previous work at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico using the megawatt planetary radar system to search for near earth asteroids\, as well as the legacy of Arecibo and the future of the observatory. \nAlessondra has a BA in astrophysics from Wellesley College and an MSc from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  She has worked for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency\, and is an award-winning educator and speaker.  In her first years of graduate school\, she worked on NASA’s OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission. DESCRIPTION:ASG Vice President Anwar Al-Mallah will present the latest updates to the astronomy simulation software he has previously shown to the club. These programs will include Universe Sandbox\, Space Engine\, Stellarium\, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. \nNew features in Universe Sandbox include the ability to model climate and cloud cover more accurately. The graphics quality in Space Engine will show improvement since the last presentation\, now being rendered on the latest RTX 30 series GPU. Galaxy collision simulations have also been improved in Universe Sandbox\, and new historical simulations have been added. \nFlybys of new astronomical sites on Earth will be shown in Flight Simulator\, and a demonstration of Stellarium will be given.
