DESCRIPTION:Green Bank 100-Meter Radio TelescopePhoto credit: Kevin A. Wilson \n\nThe speaker for our July meeting will be Dr. Patrick A. Taylor of the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia. He will be speaking on the topic of planetary radar astronomy. The meeting will be on July 25 at the Greenbelt Community Center. We gather for informal conversation at 7:00 pm and the talk begins at 7:30 pm. You may also attend the lecture via Zoom. \nDr. Taylor grew up just down the road in Annapolis and Davidsonville\, Maryland. He did his undergraduate work in physics and astronomy at the University of Maryland\, College Park\, and then earned a PhD in astronomy from Cornell University. He spent almost a decade working at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico before moving to the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston\, Texas. He then moved to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Charlottesville\, Virginia. He is currently the radar division head for NRAO and the project director for ngRADAR\, a project to put a high-power radar transmitter on the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. \nZoom Meeting Information\n\nURL: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84215108792?pwd=ZHJHWTg5MmdjSzkzZ0FGMVIzY3czdz09\nMeeting ID: 842 1510 8792\nPasscode: 193870

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our February meeting will be on February 29. We meet at 7:00 pm for general discussion\, and the presentation begins at 7:30 pm. Our speaker for this month is Ramin Lolachi\, PhD\, who will be discussing the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. \nRamin is an assistant research scientist working for the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County\, based at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt\, MD. His two main research foci are (1) light scattering at airless bodies like the Moon and asteroids and (2) measuring water vapor in the Martian atmosphere. He has been investigating how dust lofted above the surface of the Moon scatters sunlight to understand natural phenomena such as the mysterious Lunar Horizon Glow and the means of monitoring lunar dust\, a known hazard\, for the next generation of Moon explorers. He is also a part of the DART investigation team. DART is the world’s first planetary defense mission and successfully reduced the orbital period of the asteroid moon\, Dimorphos\, about its parent asteroid\, Didymos\, by colliding with it. His involvement in the mission includes modeling and measuring the amount of light scattered by the impact ejecta in order to characterize the transfer of momentum from the spacecraft to the asteroid—in other words\, to determine how big a “shove” we managed to give it). This allows us to understand how to use the kinetic impactor technique as a means of protecting Earth from a potential future impact. \nThe talk will be held at the Greenbelt Community Center. The presentations are free and open to the public. \nThe lecture will also be available online for those who wish to participate remotely. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our meeting will be held November 30\, 7:00–9:00 pm\, in room 103 at the Greenbelt Community Center. Our speaker this month is Kristen Weaver\, the deputy coordinator for the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Observer project\, which aims to extend the long-standing citizen-science and science-education program GLOBE to non-school-based audiences.  \nWhile the focus of the total solar eclipse in 2024 for many people will be the amazing astronomical phenomenon\, it is also an opportunity to observe the effect of eclipses on Earth’s atmosphere. Kristin will be speaking on how you can use the GLOBE Eclipse tool as part of GLOBE Observer as a volunteer observer to report on how the eclipse changes atmospheric conditions near you\, especially as related to clouds and air temperature. \nThis meeting will also be streamed via Zoom for those who cannot meet in person. We gather at 7:00 for informal discussion\, and the lecture begins at 7:30. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our monthly meeting on June 22 at 7:00 pm\, Dr. Kevin P. Hand will deliver a lecture entitled “Alien Oceans on Earth and Beyond.” Due to a conflict\, this meeting will be held a week earlier than our usual last-Thursday-of-the-month slot. This meeting will also be virtual only\, with no in-person meeting at the Greenbelt Community Center. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. The meeting will begin with casual conversation at 7:00 pm\, and the lecture will start at 7:30 pm. \nLecture Abstract\nWhere is the best place to find living life beyond Earth? It may be that the small\, ice-covered moons of Jupiter and Saturn harbor some of the most habitable real estate in our Solar System. Life loves liquid water and these moons have lots of it. \nThese alien oceans of the outer solar system have likely persisted for much of the history of the solar system and as a result they are highly compelling targets in our search for life beyond Earth. Dr. Hand will explain the science behind why we think we\nknow these oceans exist and what we know about the conditions on these worlds. He will focus on Jupiter’s moon Europa\, which is a top priority for future missions. He will also detail how the exploration of Earth’s ocean is helping to guide our understanding of the potential habitability of worlds like Europa. \nSpeaker Bio\nDr. Hand is a planetary scientist and astrobiologist at NASA’s JPL\, where he directs the Ocean Worlds Lab. His research focuses on the search for life in the solar system\, with an emphasis on Jupiter’s moon Europa. He is helping lead NASA’s Europa Lander mission concept\, and from 2011 to 2016 he served as the deputy chief scientist for Solar System Exploration at JPL. His fieldwork has taken him from the Artic to the Antarctica and to the depths of Earth’s ocean.
